A portable laser cleaning system with Nd:YAG and Er:YAG options, designed for artwork conservation.
Created by Lynton – manufacturers of laser cleaning systems for artwork conservation for over 25 years – Compact Phoenix™ is the latest evolution in portable, versatile conservation lasers. Designed for conservators, it combines Nd:YAG and Er:YAG technology in a single, rugged, easy-to-deploy platform.
From delicate studio work to small-scale site projects, Compact Phoenix™ helps conservators remove unwanted material from the surface of artworks with confidence. Used by leading museums, universities and heritage organisations around the world, it’s a trusted companion in the hands of those who safeguard our cultural heritage.
Used by world-renowned institutions, such as Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), Museo Nacional del Prado (Spain), Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), Brooklyn Museum (USA) and Tokyo National Museums (Japan), Compact Phoenix™ has helped conservators successfully remove unwanted material from a wide range of substrate-types.
Compact Phoenix™ delivers laser energy in a way ideally suited to artwork conservation.
The Nd:YAG laser provides short pulses of laser radiation that interact selectively with dirt layers and other unwanted surface material. These layers absorb the laser energy strongly, whereas the underlying artwork tends to reflect strongly – allowing material to be removed effectively and sensitively via a photothermal ablation process.
The Er:YAG laser delivers longer pulses of laser radiation at a wavelength further into the infrared. This combination of wavelength and pulse length tends to be more effective in enabling the precise removal of unwanted material from some metal and painted surfaces, via a gradual layer-by-layer process.
A unique, versatile and portable laser cleaning system offering Nd:YAG and Er:YAG options, designed specifically for conservation professionals.
Compact Phoenix has been used successfully by conservators on many different substrate-types, including: marble, limestone, sandstone, alabaster, granite, plaster, terracotta, wood, ivory, bronze, aluminium, and more.
Laser cleaning can be a highly selective, precise and controllable method of removing unwanted material from an object. It is also non-contact, thereby enabling the safe cleaning of the most fragile surfaces.
